These glowing ghosts take about 15 minutes to make and look amazing hanging from a porch, tree, or window after dark. A glow stick inside a white balloon creates the eerie light, and draped cheesecloth gives each one a floating, ghostly shape.
Materials
Supplies:
- White balloons
- Glow sticks (any color, green and blue look the spookiest)
- Cheesecloth or thin white fabric
- String
Tools:
- Black marker (permanent works best on balloons)
- Scissors
No cheesecloth? Use white tissue paper, a white plastic bag cut into strips, or thin white fabric scraps.
Steps
- Activate the glow stick. Bend and snap the glow stick to start it glowing. Drop it inside a white balloon before inflating.
- Inflate and tie. Blow up the balloon with the glow stick inside and tie it closed. The glow stick should light up the entire balloon from within.
- Draw a face. With the knot pointing up, use a black marker to draw a ghost face on the balloon. Simple circle eyes and an “O” shaped mouth work great.
- Drape the cheesecloth. Cut a square of cheesecloth (about 2 feet) and drape it over the balloon. Let it hang down loosely to create a flowing, ghostly shape.
- Hang it up. Tie a string around the knot at the top of the balloon. Hang your ghost from a porch ceiling, tree branch, or window frame.
Grownup help needed: None, though an adult should help younger kids tie the balloon and hang it from high spots.
