Apples aren’t just for eating. Cut one in half, dip it in paint, and press it onto paper. Instant art. The cut side of an apple makes a perfect stamp shape, and no two prints come out exactly the same.
This easy apple activity for kids works for all ages, uses supplies you probably already have, and turns an afternoon craft into a colorful masterpiece.
Materials
Supplies:
- 2 apples (any kind, slightly firm works best)
- Tempera paint (red, green, yellow, orange, brown, or any colors you like)
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Paper plates (for paint palettes)
- Paper towels
Tools:
- Knife (grownup help needed)
Don’t have tempera paint? Washable finger paint or even acrylic paint works. No construction paper? Try stamping on brown paper bags, newspaper, or plain white paper.
Steps
Grownup help needed for step 1.
- Cut the apples. Slice an apple in half from top to bottom (through the stem). This gives you the classic apple shape with the stem indent at the top. For different shapes, cut another apple in half sideways (through the middle) to reveal the star-shaped seed pattern inside.
- Dry the surface. Pat the cut side of each apple half with a paper towel. Removing extra moisture helps the paint stick and makes crisper prints.
- Set up your paint. Pour a thin layer of paint onto a paper plate. You want enough to coat the apple but not so much that it drips. Use a separate plate for each color.
- Dip and stamp. Press the cut side of the apple into the paint, then press it firmly onto your paper. Lift straight up. Don’t wiggle or slide.
- Make a pattern. Stamp rows of apples, overlap colors, or create designs. Try pressing lightly for a faded print, then hard for a bold one. Each print will be slightly different.
- Try the star. Use the sideways-cut apple half to stamp. The seed pockets create a natural star shape in the center, perfect for flowers or decorative patterns.
- Let it dry. Set your artwork flat and let it dry completely before hanging or gifting.
