Child wearing a homemade puffin costume with black wings, orange feet, and a puffin head hat

Transform felt, cardstock, and a pair of flip-flops into a full puffin costume. Kids can wear the beak-hat, felt wings, and orange webbed feet for Halloween, a school play, or just because puffins are awesome.

Materials

Supplies:

  • Large piece of white felt (for the head)
  • Large piece of black felt (for the wings and top of head)
  • Orange cardstock or construction paper (for the beak and feet)
  • Fabric glue
  • Pipe cleaners (optional, for attaching feet to flip-flops)
  • Orange flip-flops (optional)
  • Puffin costume pattern (printable PDF)

Puffin Costume Pattern

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Hole punch (for the feet)
  • Printer (for the pattern)

No felt? Use large sheets of construction paper or even old t-shirts cut to shape. The costume won’t last as long but works for a single event.

Steps

  1. Print the pattern. Download and print the puffin costume pattern. It includes pieces for the head, wings, beak, and feet.
  2. Cut the head. Trace the head shape onto white felt and cut it out. Cut the top-of-head piece from black felt.
  3. Assemble the head. Glue the seam along the top of the white head piece to create a cap shape. Glue the black pieces to the top to create the puffin’s dark crown.
  4. Make the beak. Cut the beak shape from orange cardstock. Fold it in half along the center line and glue it to the front of the head cap. Use markers to add the puffin’s colorful beak stripes (orange, yellow, and gray-blue).
  5. Add the eyes. Draw large puffin eyes on the white felt with markers, complete with the puffin’s distinctive triangular eye patches.
  6. Cut the wings. Cut two wing shapes from black felt. These slip over the arms like capes.
  7. Make the feet (optional). Cut two large webbed-foot shapes from orange cardstock. Draw lines for the webbing. Punch holes and thread pipe cleaners through them, then secure the pipe cleaners to flip-flop straps.
  8. Wear it. Put on the head, drape the wings over your arms, slip on the feet, and waddle like a puffin.

Grownup help needed: An adult should help with cutting felt and using fabric glue. Hot glue works faster but must be handled by an adult.
