These tiny strawberry ladybugs are one of the easiest animal snacks you can make. A strawberry body, a blueberry head, chocolate chip spots, and licorice legs. They take about 10 minutes and make a great summer treat or party snack.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Servings: As many as you want

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients

  • Fresh strawberries (1 per ladybug)
  • Blueberries (1 per ladybug)
  • Mini chocolate chips (3-5 per ladybug)
  • String licorice, cut into small pieces (6 per ladybug, for legs)
  • Toothpicks
  • Lettuce leaves for serving (optional)

Allergy notes: Contains dairy (chocolate chips). Check licorice for wheat/gluten.

Substitutions:

  • No blueberries? Use a small grape or raisin for the head.
  • No chocolate chips? Use small dots of chocolate frosting from a tube, or skip spots entirely.
  • No licorice? Use thin pretzel stick pieces or skip the legs.

Steps

  1. Prep the berry. Wash a strawberry and slice off the green stem and leaves so the top is flat.
  2. Attach the head. Push a toothpick into the pointed end of the strawberry, leaving about half an inch sticking out. Press a blueberry onto the toothpick.
  3. Add the spots. Push the pointed ends of mini chocolate chips into the strawberry’s surface. Use 3 to 5 chips per bug.
  4. Add the legs. Cut string licorice into six small pieces. Insert three on each side of the strawberry.
  5. Display. Arrange your ladybugs on a plate or on a lettuce leaf for a garden scene. Make as many as you need.

Grownup help needed: Cutting the licorice and helping younger kids with toothpicks.
