Build a praying mantis out of vegetables and arrange it on a plate for a healthy, creative snack. Snow peas make the body and legs, a green pepper triangle is the head, and carrot shreds create a sunny background.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes

Servings: 1

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients

  • 3-4 snow pea pods (various sizes)
  • 1 small piece of green bell pepper
  • 2 peas
  • 2-3 lettuce leaves
  • 1 carrot

Allergy notes: Naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free. Vegan-friendly.

Steps

  1. Make the body. Place the largest snow pea pod in the center of a plate as the mantis body.
  2. Add the legs. Tuck two smaller pods underneath the body at angles for legs. Cut the ends off another pod for lower leg segments.
  3. Add leg spikes. Use scissors to snip small notches along the front edges of the leg pods to mimic the tiny spines on a real mantis’s forelegs.
  4. Make the head. Cut a triangle from green bell pepper and place it at one end of the body.
  5. Add eyes and antennae. Place two peas on the head for eyes. Cut thin strips from a pod for antennae.
  6. Set the scene. Arrange lettuce leaves as the grassy background. Cut a round slice from the carrot for a sun and scatter shredded carrot around it for rays.
