These no-bake chocolate cookies look like tiny bear paws, complete with almond “claws.” They take about 30 minutes from start to finish, no oven required, and kids love shaping each paw themselves. These treats should earn lots of paw applause!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes (stovetop only)

Total Time: 30 minutes (includes cooling)

Servings: 15 cookies

Difficulty Level: Medium

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Slivered almonds (for the claws)
  • Wax paper or parchment paper

Allergy notes: Contains dairy (butter, milk) and tree nuts (almonds). May contain gluten depending on oat brand. This recipe is egg-free.

Substitutions:

  • Dairy-free? Use plant-based butter and oat milk or soy milk in place of regular butter and milk.
  • Nut-free? Skip the almond claws and press in sunflower seeds, mini pretzel sticks, or chocolate chips instead.
  • Gluten-free? Use certified gluten-free oats.

Steps

  1. Combine the wet ingredients. Add the butter, sugar, milk, and cocoa powder to a medium saucepan. Stir them together over medium heat.
  2. Bring to a boil. Keep stirring until the mixture reaches a rolling boil (big bubbles that don’t stop when you stir). Let it boil for exactly 2 minutes while stirring constantly. Do not walk away from the stove during this step.
  3. Add the oats and vanilla. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and the oats until everything is evenly mixed.
  4. Let it cool slightly. Wait about 3 to 5 minutes so the mixture is cool enough to handle without burning fingers, but still warm enough to shape.
  5. Shape the bear paws. Drop a tablespoon of the mixture onto wax paper or parchment paper. Use your fingers or the back of the spoon to shape it into a round paw pad.
  6. Add the claws. Press 5 slivered almonds into one end of each cookie, fanning them out like a bear’s claws. Work quickly before the cookies firm up.
  7. Let them set. Leave the cookies on the wax paper at room temperature until completely cool and firm, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Grownup help needed: An adult should handle the stovetop steps (1-3). The boiling mixture is very hot and can splatter. Kids can take over for shaping the paws (steps 5-6) once the mixture has cooled enough to touch safely.
