Rocks are everywhere, and with a little paint, they can become anything—such as these goofy-grinned monsters! Rock painting is one of the simplest nature crafts around. No fancy supplies needed, just rocks, paint, and imagination.
Materials
- Smooth, flat rocks (river rocks, beach stones, or craft store rocks)
- Acrylic paint or paint pens
- Craft glue
- Googly eyes
- Mini pom-poms (optional)
- Paintbrushes (various sizes)
- Pencil (for sketching designs)
- Clear acrylic sealer (spray or brush-on)
- Newspaper or a plastic placemat (to protect your workspace)
- A cup of water for rinsing brushes
Tip: Smooth, flat rocks work best. No good rocks nearby? Craft stores and garden centers sell bags of smooth river rocks for a few dollars.
Paint options: Acrylic paint is the standard: bright colors, easy water cleanup while wet, and durable when dry. Paint pens are great for details and for younger kids who struggle with brushes.
Steps
- Wash your rocks. Scrub each rock with water to remove dirt and oils. Let them dry completely. Paint sticks much better to a clean surface.
- Sketch your design. Use a pencil to lightly outline your design on the rock. This step is optional but helps, especially for detailed faces.
- Paint a base coat. If you want a solid background color, paint the whole rock first and let it dry. White is a great base that makes other colors pop.
- Add details. Paint your design. Work in thin layers and let each layer dry before adding the next. Use smaller brushes or paint pens for details like eyes, mouths, teeth, and patterns. You can also use craft glue to add googly eyes or pom-pom ears.
- Let it dry completely. Give your painted rock at least 24 hours to fully cure before sealing.
- Seal it. Apply 2-3 thin coats of clear acrylic sealer, letting each coat dry 15-20 minutes between applications. This protects the paint. Use spray sealer in a well-ventilated area or outdoors (grownup job).
Grownup help needed: Spray sealant should be applied by an adult in a well-ventilated area. Everything else is kid-safe.
