Colorful butterfly sun catcher made from black paper and tissue paper hanging in a window

Hang this butterfly sun catcher in a sunny window and watch the light pour through its colorful tissue-paper wings. It’s an easy craft that looks like stained glass when the sun hits it.

Materials

  • Black construction paper
  • Tissue paper (multiple colors)
  • Pom-poms (for the body)
  • Pipe cleaners (for antennae)
  • Glue or tape
  • Scissors
  • String for hanging

Steps

  1. Cut the butterfly shape. Fold a sheet of black construction paper in half. Draw half a butterfly wing along the fold and cut it out. Open it up for a symmetrical butterfly silhouette.
  2. Cut out the wing centers. Cut large openings inside each wing, leaving a black border frame. These openings are where the light will shine through.
  3. Add tissue paper. Cut pieces of colorful tissue paper slightly larger than the wing openings. Glue or tape them over the back of each opening. Layer different colors for a stained-glass effect.
  4. Add the body. Glue pom-poms in a line down the center fold for the butterfly’s body.
  5. Add antennae. Twist a pipe cleaner into a V shape and glue or tape it to the top of the head.
  6. Hang it up. Tape a piece of string to the top and hang your butterfly in a sunny window.
