Hang this butterfly sun catcher in a sunny window and watch the light pour through its colorful tissue-paper wings. It’s an easy craft that looks like stained glass when the sun hits it.
Materials
- Black construction paper
- Tissue paper (multiple colors)
- Pom-poms (for the body)
- Pipe cleaners (for antennae)
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- String for hanging
Steps
- Cut the butterfly shape. Fold a sheet of black construction paper in half. Draw half a butterfly wing along the fold and cut it out. Open it up for a symmetrical butterfly silhouette.
- Cut out the wing centers. Cut large openings inside each wing, leaving a black border frame. These openings are where the light will shine through.
- Add tissue paper. Cut pieces of colorful tissue paper slightly larger than the wing openings. Glue or tape them over the back of each opening. Layer different colors for a stained-glass effect.
- Add the body. Glue pom-poms in a line down the center fold for the butterfly’s body.
- Add antennae. Twist a pipe cleaner into a V shape and glue or tape it to the top of the head.
- Hang it up. Tape a piece of string to the top and hang your butterfly in a sunny window.
