Collect pairs of matching leaves and turn them into a memory card game. This activity combines a nature walk with a classic game that builds observation skills and teaches tree identification.

Materials
- 8-12 pairs of matching leaves (from different tree and shrub species)
- 16-24 index cards or pieces of cardstock
- Glue or clear tape
What to Do
- Go on a leaf hunt. Collect two matching leaves from each type of tree or shrub you can find. Aim for 8 to 12 different species. Make sure both leaves in each pair look similar in size and shape.
- Make the cards. Attach each leaf to an index card with glue or tape, one leaf per card. You should have pairs: two oak leaf cards, two maple leaf cards, two birch leaf cards, and so on.
- Press them flat. Place the cards under a heavy book for a few hours to flatten the leaves. For a sturdier game, laminate the cards or cover them with clear contact paper.
- Play. Shuffle all the cards and lay them face-down in rows. Players take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find matching leaf pairs. If you find a match, keep the pair and go again. If not, flip both cards back over. The player with the most pairs wins.
