Some people say ladybugs bring good luck. Whether that’s true or not, this ladybug craft is guaranteed to bring smiles. All you need are a few pom-poms, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners to make a whole family of fuzzy ladybug pals. Make one, make five, make a dozen. They’re quick, easy, and look adorable lined up on a windowsill.
Materials
Supplies:
- Medium pom-poms (red, orange, or yellow for the body)
- Small black pom-poms (for the head)
- Black felt
- Black pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes (2 per ladybug)
- Craft glue
Tools:
- Scissors (grownup help needed)
No black felt? Draw spots with a black marker directly on the pom-pom. No pipe cleaners? Snip thin strips of black paper and curl them around a pencil for antennae.
Steps
- Make the antennae. Cut a pipe cleaner into a 3-inch piece. Bend it into a V shape.
- Attach the head. Put a dab of glue on the point of the V. Press the small black pom-pom (the head) onto the glue. Then glue the two ends of the V between the head and the medium pom-pom (the body). Hold everything together for about 60 seconds while the glue sets.
- Add spots. Cut tiny circles from black felt and glue them onto the ladybug’s back. Real ladybugs can have anywhere from zero to 20-plus spots depending on the species, so there’s no wrong number.
- Add eyes. Glue two googly eyes onto the face.
- Shape the antennae. Gently bend the tips of the pipe cleaner upward and slightly outward so they look like real ladybug antennae.
- Make more. One ladybug is nice. A whole crew is better. Try different colors: red, orange, and yellow ladybugs all exist in nature.
Grownup help needed: Cutting felt circles and pipe cleaners works best with adult hands, especially for younger kids.
