Turn an orange and some fruit chunks into a spiky hedgehog that’s as fun to build as it is to eat. This healthy snack uses toothpicks loaded with cantaloupe and pineapple to create the “quills,” and the whole thing takes just a few minutes to assemble.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4-6 (sharing snack)
Difficulty Level: Easy
Ingredients
- 1 orange
- 1 cup cantaloupe, cut into small cubes
- 1 cup pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
- 3 whole cloves (for eyes and nose)
- 15-20 pointed toothpicks
Allergy notes: This recipe is naturally dairy-free, nut-free, and gluten-free.
Substitutions:
- No cantaloupe? Use honeydew, watermelon cubes, or strawberries.
- No pineapple? Grapes, blueberries, or kiwi chunks work on toothpicks.
- No cloves? Use raisins or small chocolate chips pressed into the orange.
Steps
- Make the body. Cut the orange in half. Place one half cut-side down on a serving plate. This is the hedgehog’s body.
- Build the spikes. Thread a cantaloupe cube and a pineapple chunk onto each toothpick. Push the toothpicks into the orange, covering the rounded top. Leave a small clear area at one end for the face.
- Add the face. Press three whole cloves into the face area: two for eyes and one for the nose.
- Serve and share. Guests pull out the toothpick “quills” to eat the fruit.
Grownup help needed: Cutting the fruit and handling cloves (small choking hazard for very young children).
