Turn plain wooden eggs into a whole zoo of painted animals. With a little paint, some pom-poms, and googly eyes, you can make a zebra, koala, panda, lion, and tiger, all from the same egg shape.
Time: 30-45 minutes
Difficulty Level: Medium
Materials
- Wooden eggs (available at craft stores)
- Acrylic craft paint
- Small pom-poms (for ears)
- Googly eyes
- Construction paper or craft foam (for ears, manes, and details)
- Black marker (fine-tip)
- Craft glue (or hot glue with help from an adult)
Tools
- Paintbrushes (small and medium)
- Scissors
- Newspaper or plastic sheet (to protect your workspace)
Steps
- Paint the base. Paint each egg the base color for your animal: white for zebra and panda, beige for koala, yellow for lion, orange for tiger. Let dry completely.
- Add patterns. Use a black marker to draw stripes on the zebra and tiger. Paint black eye patches on the panda.
- Make the ears. Glue small pom-poms to the top of the egg. For the zebra, cut small ear shapes from construction paper or craft foam and glue on.
- Add the lion’s mane. Cut a circle of orange craft foam with snipped edges. Glue it around the top of the egg so the mane radiates outward like a sun.
- Attach the face. Glue on googly eyes. Use the black marker to draw a mouth and any final details.
- Display your zoo. Line up your egg-imals on a shelf, windowsill, or in an egg carton “zoo.”
Grownup help needed: Hot glue gun if using hot glue. Supervise younger children with scissors.
