Turn plain white coffee filters into a bouquet of colorful flowers using just markers and a spray of water. When the water hits the ink, the colors bleed and blend together like real watercolors, and every flower comes out looking different. It’s part art project, part science experiment, and all fun.

Materials

Supplies (per flower):

  • 3 white coffee filters (flat-bottomed or cone style both work)
  • Washable markers (the more colors, the better)
  • 1 green pipe cleaner
  • Water in a spray bottle

Tools:

  • Newspaper or a plastic placemat (to protect your work surface)
  • A vase or jar for display

Don’t have pipe cleaners? Use green straws, wooden skewers wrapped in green tape, or even real twigs from outside for a more natural look. No spray bottle? Flick water from your fingertips or use a damp sponge.

Steps

  1. Protect your workspace. Lay newspaper or a plastic placemat on your table. The ink will bleed through, so don’t skip this step!
  2. Color the filters. Lay three coffee filters flat and scribble on one side of each with washable markers. Go bold! The more ink you put on, the more colorful your flower will be. Try using two or three colors that blend well together, like red and yellow, or blue and purple.
  3. Spray with water. Give each filter a generous spray of water. Watch the colors run and swirl into each other, creating a watercolor effect. This is the best part!
  4. Let them dry. Set the filters aside on the newspaper until completely dry. This takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how wet they are.
  5. Shape your flower. Stack all three dry filters on top of each other. Pinch them together at the center and give them a twist. Wrap one end of a pipe cleaner tightly around the pinched center to make the stem.
  6. Fluff the petals. Gently separate and pull apart each coffee filter layer, scrunching and fluffing them to create a full, rounded bloom.
  7. Make a bouquet. Repeat with more filters to make as many flowers as you want. Arrange them in a vase or jar.

Grownup help needed: This craft is kid-safe from start to finish! Just make sure to use washable (not permanent) markers, and protect surfaces from ink stains.
